D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Bobby Walker has spent quite a bit of time preparing for Sunday, March 20.
The occasion: saying thank you to the men and women who keep communities safe.
"It's just something to show my appreciation for the firefighters and police. They'll run into a burning house at the drop of the dime. They're just one phone call away," said Walker.
In a public appreciation event for all first responders and their family, Walker cooked more than 700 pounds of crawfish. Without support from the local community, Walker says the event wouldn't have been possible.
"As far as all the trimmings, and the place to have it at, Southern Elite hosted it for me, Gulf Coast Produce came through big time. They gave all the trimmings to go in it," said Walker.
D'Iberville fireman, Gerald Smith, added "I think it's great. It shows the people in the community care about what we do, Just like we care about the community."
There was even an area for children to enjoy the event as well.
"Kids don't really like crawfish a lot, so we got some hamburgers and hot dogs for them to eat," said Walker. "We wanted to have entertainment so that they won't pester the parents while they eat the crawfish."
People in attendance hope the appreciation event will take place again in 2017.
Event sponsors included The Scarlet Pearl Casino, Blossman Gas, Porta Pottys, Southern Elite, Hiram at The Filling Station, Reno's Sports Bar and Rhett Dennison.
