GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Port of Gulfport took delivery today of three new ship-to-shore gantry cranes. The trio of cranes were made in China by ZPMC, which is the world's largest manufacturer of such equipment at a cost of $30 million.
Port director Jonathan Daniels is excited to see the new cranes, which he says will make the port more efficient and successful.
As for critics who've said this is too much crane for the size ships the port can handle, Daniels had a reply.
"Those are the same people who, if we'd bought smaller cranes and then had a future need for more capacity, would then say, 'you should have bought larger cranes,'" said Daniels.
The cranes will be offloaded beginning on Sunday. They should be fully operational in 60 to 90 days.
