OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A camp that offers support for adult cancer patients has been shut down by the state of Mississippi.
The Secretary of State says Mississippi Gulf Coast Bluebird Cancer Retreat spent money on personal expenses without proper documentation, among other allegations.
The state has ordered the organization to stop collecting donations, effective immediately. They've also been ordered to pay a $2,000 penalty.
The Secretary of State also says the group "failed to produce any records showing that it conducted any board meetings in 2014 and also failed to produce a copy of an agreement outlining the terms and services for which it owed any payment to Gloria Skillestad, executive director of MS Gulf Coast Bluebird, thus violating Miss. Code Ann. §79-11-525."
While the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bluebird Cancer Retreat is no longer operating, you can still make donations to a new group called South Mississippi Camp Bluebird.
That organization is still up and running, and it is not affiliated with the group that got shut down.
