SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Monday morning, the Mississippi Department of Transportation announced that flood waters could force the closure of Interstate 10 and Interstate 59 near the MS/LA border. MDOT officials tell us they are closely monitoring the situation, but both interstates remain open at this time.
The agency is urging drivers who use these routes to stay aware of changing conditions, pay attention to traffic alerts and have an alternative route in mind if the interstates do need to be closed.
"We are coordinating with LADOT and MHP. There are message boards in place. We're using social media, traditional media to alert drivers to plan their route," said MDOT spokesman Michael Flood.
Louisiana State Police say they do not anticipate any interstate closings in the Slidell area. They say troopers are in the area monitoring water levels.
WLOX News Now will let you know when and if the closures go into effect.
