TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Many were forced to evacuate their homes Friday as storms left communities in Tangipahoa Parish under water.

Over the course of the day, parish officials working alongside the National Guard rescued approximately 500 people as the tide rose. Many others evacuated themselves or helped their neighbors.

One of those lending a hand was Aubrey Edwards. His daughter and grandson were trapped on the second floor of an apartment complex on Rufus Bankston Road near Natalbany.

"When they told me the water was too high to come, I got a pretty high truck so I said, 'I'm gonna give it a try,'" Edwards said.

He drove through the flooded streets, carting them both to safety.

"Being a parent, your job is never over. You know, and I'm just glad to be there for her," he said.

"I was relieved I didn't think I was gonna get out. So much time had passed by," said his daughter Ieshia Edwards.

This sort of scene played out across the Hammond area, starting early in the morning when sheriff boats were deployed to rescue families from the storm before taking them to makeshift shelters set up by the Red Cross.

"We just got some dry clothes and our lives, and we got our lives so thank God for that," said one flooding victim as she arrived at the shelter.

"We know our stuff can be replaced, but we can't, so we're just happy to get out of there," said another flooding victim.

Across town on West David Drive, good Samaritans helped others escape from the rising tide. Lawrence Wesbee and his team rescued more than 15 people with a boat and truck.

"This my cousin here and this is his friend. His family got stranded so we're gonna get them out of here," he said.

No one was injured or killed from the flooding in Tangipahoa Parish.
