GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant held a news conference in Gulfport Friday afternoon to warn Mississippians that steady rain has created dangerous flooding conditions across the state.

The Mississippi National Guard has already made 21 water rescues, and as many as 200 homes in Pearl River County alone are expected to take in water over the coming days.

The flooding is being compared to a tropical system like Hurricane Isaac just a few years ago. If you had flooding in Isaac, you can expect more of the same from this storm.

Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy reminded everyone that the Coastal Flood Advisory is still in effect until Saturday. And River Flood Warnings will exist until Tuesday. Lacy said there is another system coming off the coast of Mexico, and it still has to pass by us, so more rain is on the way.

Congressman Steven Palazzo got a laugh from the crowd of journalists when he said, "Don't make the news." The serious point he and the others at the news conference wanted to hammer home was that driving through standing water puts you and others in danger. Don't do anything that could make you a "news story."
