Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Biloxi

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A man was killed Thursday night by Biloxi police officers near the Popp's Ferry Bridge. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Wesley Sheppard, 37, of Biloxi, was shot by police.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now leading this investigation.

Warren Strain, public affairs director for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said the initial call came in about a man discharging a gun on the bridge around 8:30 p.m.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said three officers are on administrative leave as the investigation moves forward.

Strain said witnesses and officers are being interviewed, and all weapons are being sent to the state crime lab for analysis. Strain said he cannot speculate on who shot who.

Sheppard's body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Pearl, and his autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

This is the third officer-involved shooting in South Mississippi this month. On March 1, a man was killed in a shootout with Gautier police. On March 8, a D'Iberville police officer shot at an 18-year-old after police say the man raised a gun at the officer. The man was not hit.
