Waveland annexation 'won't go down without a fight'

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - Reaction to an attempt by Waveland city leaders to annex areas to its west was definite from Long time Hancock County Supervisor David Yarborough. In a candid interview with WLOX News Now, Yarborough said, "This one won't go down without a fight."

Waveland leaders want to annex areas of the Lakeshore and Clermont Harbor communities south of the railroad tracks, which would include the Silver Slipper Casino.

Yarborough said although he has a lot of respect for the Waveland Board of Aldermen, "The revenues derived from the Slipper are too important to the county."

Yarborough said 25 percent of the sheriff's department budget is gaming revenue.

He also said the plan would kill the Clermont Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, which would lose half of the homes it serves in its fire district.

Yarborough went on to say he had gotten a lot of phone calls over the weekend from his constituents, none of whom supported the annexation plan.
