GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Mississippi's new supreme court justice took her ceremonial oath of office in Gulfport on Monday.

Justice Dawn Beam's investiture ceremony was held at First Baptist Church. Gov. Phil Bryant, who appointed Beam, said she is highly respected for her accomplishments and for how she stands up for children.

Beam said God placed her in this new position, and she pledged to continue to be the voice for abused children.

"It's exciting to be in Harrison County today. Harrison County has the largest number of foster children in our state, and Hancock County has had major challenges in regard to abuse and neglect issues," said Beam. "This is a great opportunity for me to work with Judge Alfonso, Judge Steckler and the other local judges to lead the way for positive change with our children."

Beam is from Sumrall. A second investiture ceremony was held for her this afternoon at USM in Hattiesburg.

The Mississippi State Legislature is back in session and as usual a fight is brewing over money. Still unresolved is what to do with  $750 million coming from BP over 17 years because of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. To the people here on the coast, there is no question that all of the money should be spent on projects in South Mississippi. But so far, the powers in Jackson and the rest of the state won't agree to that.
