Copy-Officials: Inmate found dead in cell ruled a homicide

ADAMS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Prison officials found 55-year-old Luis Carrasco-Cortex dead in his cell at the Adams County Correctional Facility March 4 at 12:43 p.m.

It is still unclear what happened to him, but prison officials suspect "he might have had an altercation".

Cortex's autopsy findings show blunt force trauma, lack of oxygen in his lungs, dislocation fracture of his jaw bone, rib fractures and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The Adams County Sheriff's office and FBI are investigating.

Coroner James E. Lee said, "I do not understand how someone could receive those type of injuries in jail and no one knows how it happen".

He also said "This case will be ruled a homicide until the FBI or Sheriff's Department determine differently".

In 2012, prison guard, Catlin Carithers was killed at the same facility during a riot. At one point during the riot, about 300 inmates held 20 guards hostage for nine hours before riot police moved in and ended it.
