GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

If you want to add a new furry friend to your family, there's a special adoption event going on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport is offering half price adoption fees for large dogs at the facility. Larger dogs are sometimes more difficult to place, and the Humane Society is looking for loving homes for a large number of large dogs in their care.

Organizers hope the big adoption event will help open up space for the busy spring and summer months ahead. According to their website, "HSSM is kicking off the spring season with this "Big" adoption special, as an influx of homeless animals is expected during the coming warmer months."

For those thinking about adding a new pet to the family, HSSM says the adoption event is the perfect time. Residents might even end up falling in love with one of the "large lonely heart" dogs; pets that have been in the shelter waiting for a home more than thirty days.

All adoptions include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, a microchip and free vet exam within seven days of the adoption.

The Jackson County Humane Society is also holding an adoption event at Petco on Saturday.
