Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania held a news conference Thursday afternoon to discuss a series of shootings and other crimes plaguing the city since the start of 2016.

Gulfport police has responded to five shootings since Jan. 6; one fatal.Ny-Gel Poole, 16, was shot and killed on 19th St. on Jan. 23. Kobe Jaquan Augustine, 15, admitted to shooting Poole twice, according to an arrest affidavit.

Papania has previously stated that he wants to work to wipe the criminal element out of Gulfport. On Thursday Papania stressed that recent crimes do not define the city, and that a dialogue about gun laws is necessary. Papania also released updates to several high profile cases his department is currently investigating.

Mike Lacy will have the details tonight on WLOX News Now.
