GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Changing light bulbs, saving water and replacing old air conditioners has earned the Gulfport Seabee Base accolades for energy conservation from the Navy for the second year in a row.
The Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Award presented the base commander with the SECNAV Energy Flag to fly at the base.
The award recognized efforts of leadership and personnel at Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport in developing energy awareness, deploying energy efficient technologies, and adopting procedures that reduced energy and water consumption on base and fostering a culture of conservation.
Among the energy efficiency actions at the Seabee Base included:
- Replaced 12 inefficient air conditioning chillers with 11 energy efficient chillers, removing 2,200 lbs. of ozone depleting substances;
- Replaced, 8,000 street lamps and outdoor lights energy efficient LED lights;
- Reduced water consumption by 62% since 2003
- Produced 3.6 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions more than 2,550 tons and saving nearly $102,000 in energy costs.
