One of the most serious and significant actions our government will ever take is putting a person to death. The State Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make part of that process secret. The idea behind the new bill is to protect the suppliers of the lethal drugs and to keep secret the names of the witnesses, again to protect them.
But this is a dangerous path we travel when we allow the government to go into the shadows in any way to carry out an execution. Keeping it in the open makes sure everyone knows how the state carries out the sentence.
We think a bill being considered now in the state legislature to keep part of the process secret is a really bad idea.
