MOBILE, AL (WLOX) - South Alabama used a grand slam off the bat of Adam Wolfe in a six-run fifth inning to power the Jaguars past the Golden Eagles. It was the first loss suffered by Southern Miss this season after having run off 7 straight wins.
The Golden Eagles pitching staff issued a season-high 12 walks, including three in the fifth inning.
The Jaguars got to Southern Miss starting pitcher Stevie Powers with a sacrifice fly in the third to give South Alabama a 1-0 lead.
Nick Dawson led the Golden Eagles with two hits and tied the game in the fifth with a run-scoring triple to left-center.
He drove in another run with a single to right field in the seventh. Jack Sandlin added an RBI infield single to get Southern Miss within 7-3.
South Alabama starting pitcher Hunter Soleymani (1-0) got the win. He allowed three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings with a walk and four strikeouts.
Southern Miss will try to bounce back under the win column Wednesday night at 7:05 at MGM Park in Biloxi where the Golden Eagles entertain South Alabama.
