More than 30 pounds of drugs seized by MHP

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Following two separate weekend stops, two people are in jail and more than 30 pounds of drugs were confiscated in East Rankin County.

According Mississippi Department of Public Safety Public Affairs Director Warren Strain, the first stop occurred Friday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. Strain says the MHP Interdiction Unit stopped a Volvo tractor-trailer truck hauling passenger cars. Upon searching the trailer, officials found at least $200 in cash, 10 packages of of high-grade marijuana (approximately 10 pounds), 9.3 ounces of heroin and 1.1 pounds of cocaine.

The driver of the trailer was not taken into custody, but a 2007 BMW was seized.

Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m., the Interdiction Unit pulled over a 2008 Ford Escape, where 19 pounds of purified crystal meth, known as "ice", was located in a false compartment. Twenty-two-year-old Laurie A. Davis of Del Valle, Texas and 29-year-old Daniel A. Jones of Austin, Texas were arrested and charged with possession of meth with the intent to deliver. In addition to drugs and cash, authorities also found $725.

Both stops were made on I-20 in East Rankin County, the investigations are ongoing.

    The Biloxi Shuckers (58-40, 17-11) earned their sixth consecutive win on Saturday night with a 4-1 triumph over the Tennessee Smokies (50-49, 14-15) at MGM Park. RHP Marcos Diplan (W, 1-1) notched his first Double-A win by tossing 6.2 innings of one run ball.
