GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi State Port Authority board of commissioners held its monthly meeting Thursday morning. Board members received an update on the ongoing construction work at the port. They also went out for bid on several new projects, including the construction of a new wharf facility where the USM research ship will dock.

Port Director Jonathan Daniels told commissioners that McDermott will begin spooling pipe in the next few weeks.

"It's a watershed moment," Daniels told the board.

He also updated them on the recent announcement that Top Ship will be investing millions and creating 1,000 new jobs at the inland port facility off Seaway Road.

Finally, commissioners were told to circle March 16th on their calendars. That's when two giant cranes will arrive at the port from China.
