GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport police worked an accident Thursday morning involving a motorcycle and sedan at the intersection of Lorraine Road and East Taylor Road.
Gulfport Police Public Information Officer Damon McDaniel said the collision happened shortly before 6 a.m. when a motorcyclist was driving north on Lorraine Road. McDaniel reports the driver of a sedan pulled in front of the motorcycle from East Taylor Road.
The motorcyclist was thrown off of the motorcycle. Police said he was taken to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.
WLOX News Now has done several reports on this exact intersection. Many residents and business owners in the area have complained that it is a dangerous intersection. Gulfport city leaders have asked MDOT to install a traffic light at the intersection but MDOT engineers said that will not happen at this time.
In October, MDOT District Engineer Kelly Castleberry said based on a recent study that looked at certain criteria like traffic volume, accident history and turn movements, the intersection does not need a light.
"Motorists traveling Taylor Road do have access to a traffic signal currently located at Brentwood," said Castleberry. "MDOT did discuss movement of the Brentwood signal to Taylor Road with the city of Gulfport."
City leaders said both locations need a traffic light.
