First-round of the girls state basketball playoffs tipped off Monday night

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The quest to be the best in the girls state basketball ranks continued Monday night.  When the dust had settled in the gyms, the season came to an end for nine teams.

Gulfport advanced into the second round of the Class 6A ranks.  The Lady Admirals sailed under the win column with a 45-39 victory. Gulfport will be on the road at Jim Hill Friday.  Ocean Springs hosted Biloxi and in the end, the Lady Greyhounds prevailed 51-46. Ocean Springs travels to Brandon in the second round.

The Pascagoula Lady Panthers posted a 41-33 victory over Stone to advance in the Class 5A state playoffs.  The Lady Panthers will travel to Provine on Friday.  The Picayune Maroon Lady Tide rolled over Long Beach 53-25 and will hit the road at West Jones in the second round.

The Bay High Lady Tigers cruised under the win column in the Class 4A playoffs.  Bay High defeated Poplarville 78-34.  Pass Christian trailed 27-20 midway through the third quarter, but rallied to eliminate Greene County 44-38.  East Central posted a 56-53 victory over Forrest County AHS and Moss Point crushed Sumrall 62-40 as all four teams in the Region 8-4A ranks advanced into the second round of the state playoffs.

The St. Patrick Lady Irish enjoyed a banner-season, but the season came to an end Monday night.  Port Gibson beat the Lady Irish 46-28 in the Class 3A state playoffs.  St. Patrick closed out its best season-ever with 20 wins and 9 losses.

The boys open the first-round of the state playoffs Tuesday night at 7:00 but with severe weather forecast for the coast, there may be some concern for teams traveling in buses.  WLOX will let you know if schools decide to postpone games until Wednesday.
