West Harrison Lady Canes ready to make a run at the Class 5A State Championship

Coach Otis Gates has built West Harrison into a major player in the Class 5A State basketball ranks.  His Lady Canes have netted 22 wins in 24 games.
He says the key to moving deep into the state playoffs...defense.

"We've got  to continue to play good on defense, "stated Gates.  "And of course, everybody is gearing up to stop Ameshya inside and I have some seniors who have been stepping up and have played well and we have to continue to do that."

6-foot-2 senior Meshya Williams is the Lady Canes backbone. She's the go to player, bagging 24.3 points, 13.7 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 2.9 steals per game.

Gates said, "To be as big as she is she controls her body real well.  She's very athletic.  Great hands. Can catch passes.  The fact that she's so much bigger than most people, that doesn't hurt either."

If West Harrison is going to have success in the state playoffs, other players must step up their play.

"Amari Graves, a senior, Gerrianna Williams, a senior, and Vin'Sha Hatcher...all three of those senior guards of late have been hitting shots and have opened things up for Ameshya inside.

West Harrison will meet the survivor between Natchez and South Jones on Friday.
