GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Domino's Pizza on Lorraine Rd. frequently participates in fundraiser nights. However, an upcoming event is a little different.
After watching the news and learning about a tragic car accident that killed three people, operating manager Jerry Kelly realized the family were his customers.
"So I called them to offer my condolences, and learned they were struggling with their finances," said Kelly. "So I knew I had to do something."
Kelly got with his bosses and decided to host a fundraiser night where 20% of the proceeds will go toward the Matute family.
"The funeral arrangements have been set aside and put aside because they were struggling financially with it, and I thought to myself this is paying for not one funeral, but three," said Kelly.
Julisa Matute, 16, along with her father and 13-year-old sister were all killed in the six vehicle crash on Highway 49. William Leonard, a delivery driver, remembers bringing several pizzas to their door.
"They were always a very polite family. I've never had any issues with them and when I heard the news that they had been in that wreck, It was just very surprised that something could happen to a family like that," said Leonard.
With so many orders coming in each day, it's hard to remember all their regular customers. But Kelly says there's something about the 16 year old he'll never forget.
"Julisa, she was such a sweet girl. She would call up, she was very very polite, very courteous always seemed real happy. She was one of those customers you have you're like 'Hi Julisa, how's your day going?' It's not just 'Thanks for calling Domino's.' It's one of those people." said Leonard.
The family members will be laid to rest in the coming week, and the fundraiser will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24. All Gulf Coast Domino's will be participating, simply mention the Matute family when placing your order.
