Fire chief named Outstanding Biloxian

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney was recently named Biloxi's Outstanding Citizen 2015.

The Lions Club selected Boney for his service to the city and his charitable efforts. The organization says Boney lives and breathes Biloxi and its history. Additionally, the chief has inspired Biloxi firefighters to donate their time to relief efforts in other states after natural disasters.

The chief says he's humbled by the honor, especially after seeing the list of great Biloxians who've been honored in the past. Boney says he starts each day with the same mission in mind.

"I love to serve the people of Biloxi," said Chief Boney. "I get up everyday and do that, and I enjoy that. It's not a job to me. It's a passion, and I think that spills over into my free time. I just want to help serve people."

Mayor Fofo Gilich, the 2014 winner Katherine Blessey and Lions Club President Penny Edwards presented the event.
