Trial date set for ex-spa manager charged in human trafficking case

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - There are new developments in the case of the former manager of a St. Martin spa at the center of a human trafficking investigation. The trial for Yeon Sook Hwang has been pushed back until May 9th.

The 41 year old former manager of JJ Spa and 777 Spa is charged with transporting women for prostitution and money laundering. Court records show U.S. District Judge Halil S. Ozerden granted a request for a continuance for Hwang's attorney to adequately prepare for trial.

Prosecutors say an undercover investigation found evidence that 50 prostitutes were rotated through the business during a seven month period in 2013, and that the business made nearly $1 million during a two year period beginning in 2012.

Hwang remains in federal custody. If convicted on all charges, she could face 50 years in prison and fines well over a million dollars.
