D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - A Seabee stationed in Gulfport is now the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command 2015 Sailor of the Year.

Heritage United Methodist Church in D'Iberville honored Construction Mechanic 1st Class Michael Steffey Sunday morning for his achievements. Steffey competed with thousands of others for the award.

He just returned to South Mississippi after being deployed. Steffey was given the award in Virginia Beach. He says this wouldn't be possible without support.

"Really it's a lot of hard work and it's not just me. It's from everyone in the command," said Steffey. "From the higher ups who recognize you and put you in the package to the junior troops who work hard for you and just making everything happen. It's really a group effort."

Steffey will now go to the next level of competition.
