GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport firefighter was severely injured Saturday during an accident at the station.
According to a press release from Gulfport Fire Department, the firefighter "was pinched between the door opening and the fire truck when they were attempting to back the engine into the garage at Fire Station 5."
The firefighter, who has been identified as engineer Mark Headrick from Engine Company 5 in District 2, sustained a significant cut to the back of his head and broke his jaw during the accident, according to the release.
The lacerations were repaired at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. Headrick was then transported to the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, where he will have his jaw repaired.
Residents from all over the Mississippi Gulf Coast have expressed a great deal of concern to Headrick by posting their support on the fire department's social media pages.
The Gulfport Fire Department said Headrick is in stable condition, conscious, and communicating, although he is in a significant amount of pain.
