LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - A large grant will help USM Gulf Park get on a healthier track. Thursday, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation presented a check for nearly $197,000 to the Long Beach campus. The donation helped launch USM's new Health is Golden campaign to promote nutrition, exercise and making healthy choices.
The money has already been used to fund fitness classes, workout equipment, campus walks, and 70 free memberships to the fitness center for the faculty and staff.
"This is huge. This is a game changer for our campus," said Dr. Steve Miller, USM Gulf Park Vice President. "It comes at a critical time. We've been fortunate to start a fitness center and a health center on campus, and a grant like this gives us the resources we need to finish building it out, to start wellness programs we've never had."
The grant also covers staffing for the new health and fitness centers, including a dietitian.
