JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A circuit court judge has ordered the city of Gautier to pay more than $63,000 in back holiday pay to 25 current and former firefighters.
Each of the firefighters named in the Circuit Court of Jackson County's order will now receive anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars in back holiday pay. Some of that money must be withheld for FICA, as well as employee contributions to PERS.
A legal dispute led to the firefighters not receiving any holiday pay, starting in April 2013. Their union was asking for 24 hours of pay per holiday, instead of the 8 hours of pay other city employees receive.
In addition to paying a total of $63,011.04 in back holiday pay to the firefighters, the city will also have to pay $8,468.47 in PERS contributions, bringing the total judgment to $71,479.51.
