GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Plans to consolidate Harrison County's youth court and its related services are moving forward.
Judge Margaret Alfonso appeared before county supervisors Monday, along with youth court administrator Cindy Alexander. They are looking to use the health department building in Biloxi as a future location for a courtroom and youth court services.
That county owned building is next door to the juvenile detention center and is now largely vacant following recent consolidation by the state health department.
Judge Alfonso said besides the health department building, she would need a new building capable of holding eight offices.
The county is looking to save money with the consolidation plan; transportation costs would be virtually eliminated with a consolidated site. Judge Alfonso said the main advantage is that a central site would be much better for the children who come through youth court.
