OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs recently named Stacy Howell as its new executive director during its annual membership meeting.

Howell previously served as programs coordinator since September 2014, leading the creation of The Mary C programming, such as Transformation Theatre, the Teen Arts Council, and The Underground Theatre.

According to the Mary C., Howell plans to create an experience for everyone who comes to the arts center.

“We are special because we have professionals in a variety of art forms, including visual arts, performing arts, culinary arts, and more,” she said in a press release. “And by finding themes of tying these art forms together it creates unforgettable experiences."

She has worked with a variety of partner organizations, including: The Mississippi Humanities Council, Biloxi Little Theatre, The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Broadway South Reparatory Company, Triple Threat Academy, Downstage Productions, Just Over The Rainbow Theatre, the Disability Connection and more.

Prior to joining The Mary C, Howell was the New Locations director and a director of Lola's Laboratory, the children's theatre in residence at The National Theatre in Washington, DC. She also served as a theatre director in Virginia for a year with Culpeper County High School, Floyd T. Binns Middle School, and the Christian Youth Theatre in Fredericksburg, VA. In addition, she was a speech and debate teacher and coach at Ridgeland High School for ten years, where she coached numerous local, state, and national champions, including the 2012 National Poetry Out Loud National Champion.

Howell is still involved with Poetry Out Loud through the Mississippi Arts Commission and is currently serving as executive director of the Mississippi Theatre Association.

The Mary C. is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information on classes and events at the center, call 228-818-2878.
