WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - A half dozen people in Waveland escaped an early morning fire that destroyed one apartment and a business Wednesday.
The fire broke out in a building on Highway 90 with several apartments on the first floor and a karate business on the second floor.
Waveland Fire Chief Tony Mallini said the blaze started around 2:40 a.m. in one of the first floor apartments and quickly spread to the second floor karate studio, then into the roof.
Mallini said six or seven people inside the apartments escaped unharmed. Firefighters from Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Bayside and Clermont Harbor battled the intense blaze in the pouring rain and lightning storm for about two hours before getting it under control.
Mallini said it's not clear whether there were any smoke detectors in the building.
