PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Pascagoula leaders will honor a woman making history in pro football. The city decided to dedicate the gym at the Pascagoula Recreation Center as the Sarah Bailey Thomas Gym. The Pascagoula native is blazing a trail from her home city to the NFL, taking a role as the league's first female official.
Officials say the dedication is in honor of the strides Thomas has made for women.
"We've made a lot of progress in the last few decades, but we still have a long way to go in certain fields, professional athletics being one of them," said Pascagoula Public Relations Specialist Anne Pitre. "It's also a show of respect and support for her family.. it's all a sense of community, and we take a lot of pride in our people who go on to accomplish great things on a national scale."
Tyler Bouldin had a chance to sit down with the family of Sarah Thomas. Super Bowl Sunday on WLOX News, take a look inside Sarah's NFL experience.
City leaders hope to hold a dedication ceremony on March 3, 2016.
