HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Resolutions honoring a pair of fallen Hattiesburg Police officers and their families were passed by Mississippi legislators.

On Tuesday, members of the House stood in honor of Officer Benjamin Deen as Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 551 was passed.

Within a week of one another, Officer Liquori Tate was honored in the House as House Concurrent Resolution No. 16 was passed.

Officers Tate and Deen were killed on May 9, 2015, during a traffic stop in downtown Hattiesburg.

“For our city, May 9 will always stand out as one of the darkest days in our history,” State Rep. House District 102, Toby Barker said.

For Deen, the resolution reads:

A concurrent resolution extending the condolences of the Legislature to the surviving family and pay tribute to the memory of Hattiesburg Police Patrolman Benjamin J. Deen and his surviving family.

For Tate, the resolution reads:

A concurrent resolution mourning the loss and commemorating the life, legacy and extraordinary courage of Officer Liquori Tate of the Hattiesburg Police Department.

“This was something that Sen. Billy Hudson and I had been working on together,” Barker said. “We decided to do one from the House and one from the Senate; they sacrificed their lives together, so we thought it would be fitting to have both sides come together for this.”

The resolutions detail the two fallen officers' past, from their birthdays, to previous occupations as well as family members.

“Hearing them being read out loud, it was an emotional thing,” Barker said. “Tate and Deen had this daily task of protecting Hattiesburg and then we saw ourselves, that was something that hurt and it was something that will hurt for a long time.”

Tate’s resolution opened with a quote:

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven,” and as such, the grand architect of the universe, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul’s destiny has summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Officer Liquori Tate, to eternal rest, as he has made life’s final transition…"

“I think both of them are the highest of heroes, and I’ll say it again, it was just so humbling to have the House stand and honor Tate and Deen,” Barker said.
