Gulfport police host blood drive benefit for LA deputy

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport police spent Monday helping another brother in blue. The police department hosted a blood drive for Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Arnold. Arnold is a DEA Task Force Officer who was shot in the line of duty last month in Louisiana, while helping agents serve a search warrant.

Officials say Arnold is still in the hospital, so this is one of the ways the law enforcement community united to help the officer and his family.

"For us, we know that these types of partnerships are vital," said Terry Davis with the DEA. "They are very very critical, especially in the trying times in which we live right now. Tragically, law enforcement officers are killed every year in the line of duty or severely injured as well."

The Blood Center says 34 total units were collected during the drive, enough to save more than 100 separate lives.

Blood donations in honor of Deputy Arnold can be made anytime in the next year and will go toward helping Arnold and his family with hospital and travel expenses.
