BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport Admirals head coach Owen Miller is in his fifth season and knows what it takes to get to the top of the mountain having captured the 2014 Class 6A State Championship.
After 21 games, his Admirals have netted 14 victories.
Miller said, "We've been very good in rebounding the ball. We're plus-8 on the glass over our opponents and defensively we've been good. Now we've had some bad nights defensive, but overall we've been pleased with our defensive effort and what we've been able to accomplish rebounding the ball."
Gulfport relies on team play with all on the board getting the job done. Keevon Oney is netting 10 points and 4 rebounds, shooting 54 percent from the field.
Tyrell Mcarthur 9 points and 3.5 rebounds. Raekwon Murphy is clipping in 8.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
6-foot-6 sophomore Dequarius McCord 5.8 points and a team leading 6.5 rebounds.
6-5 senior Carl Terrell is bagging 5.6 points and 5.2 rebounds an outing. Alton Conerly started late because of football, but he's also making an impact.
Gulfport competes in the highly competitive Region 8-6A ranks with the likes of Biloxi, Hancock and Harrison Central.
"A total of 18 state championships between the four teams, "stated Miller. "So, each team has at least one, so there's a lot of history and with that you're got four really good teams this year. It's going to come down to a couple of possessions on who wins our district."
Gulfport entertains Harrison Central Friday night before both teams compete in Hoopsfest 2016 on Saturday.
