BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
St. Stanislaus missed a number of scoring opportunities with headers that headed in the opposite direction and solid kicks that were too solid and sailed over the net.
In the 30th minute, Austin Miller got the ball rolling in the right direction. He bagged the Rockachaws first goal and the rout was on. It could have been worse as we said, but the Sumrall keeper made a number of saves to keep St. Stanislaus out of the net until Miller hit pay dirt.
Eleven minutes later, West Zimmerman made a beautiful shot. He sent the ball spinning and it curved high into the net away from the keeper and the Rockachaws led 2-0.
In the 17th minute, two minutes after Zimmerman's goal, the Rockachaws displayed great team work and were aggressive. The ball was delivered in front of the Sumrall net and James Estrada came up with a high kick, the ball dropped into the Bobcats net for a 3-0 St. Stanislaus advantage.
in the 14th minute, 6-3, 185 pound junior Corbin Blanchard kicked home the 4th goal of the night and there was no stopping the Rockachaws of head coach Ryan Joiner. St. Stanislaus coasted under the win column to the tune of 10-0.
Bay High, the Region 8-4A runners up to St. Stanislaus traveled to North Pike. The Tigers also had success and posted a 5-0 victory. The Lady Tigers also prevailed over North Pike, netting a 3-1 victory to advance into second round play on Saturday.
By the time I left the West Harrison Lady Canes playoff game with Provine and arrived in Pass Christian, the Lady Pirates held a commanding 8-0 halftime advantage over Sumrall. I'll have some highlights on West Harrison in a second.
Sophomore Madison Lafontaine gave the Lady Pirates a 9-0 lead early in the second half and most of the starters would exit for Pass Christian. That was the final score as the Lady Pirates post a first round Class 4A playoff victory.
West Harrison hosted Provine and just like the St. Stanislaus game, the Lady Canes missed a number of scoring opportunities early. Six-minutes into the game, Sydney-Brooks Sims sent the ball to Gabby Vincent and the junior standout would deliver giving West Harrison the lead.
Five minutes later the Lady Canes increased that lead to two when sophomore Haley Kim exploded to the net on a breakaway. She kicked the ball past the Provine keeper and you could see what was going to happen.
In the 25th minute of the first half the Lady Canes set up for a corner kick. Vincent sent the ball to Summer Hansen and the senior ripped a solid kick off a Provine player that popped into the net and West Harrison led 3-0.
The Lady Canes would get an impressive 8-0 win to advance into the second round.
Ocean Springs enjoyed success with both the boys and girls. The Lady Greyhounds opened the Class 6A playoffs by taking out Oak Grove 3-0. The boys team would also ring up an identical 3-0 victory over the Oak Grove Warriors.
The Gulfport Lady Admirals begin play in the Class 6A playoff Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Gulfport athletic director Bryan Caldwell decided to move the game up one hour in an effort to beat impending rain forecast for Tuesday.
