PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Ingalls Shipbuilding awarded nearly $100,000 in STEM (science, technology, engineering, match) grants to 25 schools from Mississippi and Alabama Friday morning. It is the eighth year for Ingalls to provide grant funds to local schools.
Vice President of Human Resources and Administration, Edmond Hughes, lightheartedly referred to the awards as a "selfish endeavor." He said Ingalls views the awards as an investment opportunity. The hope is that students will become interested in careers in STEM fields and possibly work for Ingalls one day.
Several of the programs funded through these grants included robotics, coding, several classes in the arts and many others. Ingalls has provided a total of $709,818 in STEM grants over the past eight years.
Jonathan Brannan will have more on this story later today on WLOX News Now and WLOX.com.
