With the Mississippi state legislature back in session in Jackson, one of the biggest issues on the agenda is funding for public schools. A huge battle was waged last year in a push for more spending for education.
Ballot Initiative 42, a method of forcing the legislature to appropriate spending, failed. But the failure of the voters to pass 42 certainly should not be seen as a signal that voters don't care about public school education. It should only be accepted as a vote against control of state spending.
The control still remains squarely in the hands of the state legislators. We urge each of our lawmakers to become experts on how to improve our students education and fund those programs. Our young people are our future.
