Ocean Springs head coach Jeff French is always trying to upgrade his team, fine-tuning his Greyhounds soccer skills, getting them ready for the upcoming district playoffs.
When you look at this practice session, you may be wondering why his players are throwing the soccer ball around? French says this learning concept will help improve his team in a crucial area, a vital skill that separates championship contenders from pretenders.
"That's heading the ball, "stated French. "Whether it's for defensive clearance, whether it's for a goal scoring opportunity or whether it's actually using the header to pass."
Ocean Springs is unbeaten in the Region 7-6A ranks with four consecutive victories and are led by Steven Gallagher who has 16 goals and 8 assists. Allan Mays has added 9 goals and 10 assists. Keeper Travis Harper has 6 shutouts and 82 saves.
French admits his Greyhounds aren't at the top of their game, but he says you must consider the opposition.
He said, "We've taken some lumps when you put into prospective we've played some really good teams. We've played the best teams in our state and Louisiana. We haven't come out the way I thought we would, but I think it bodes well for us in the future. It's going to make us that much stronger going into the playoffs."
On a positive note...Ocean Springs defeated Madison Central 2 to 1 on January 8th. It was the first win over the state's number one ranked team in six years.
The Greyhounds entertain George County Tuesday night at 7:30.
