GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Monday is the day set aside to honor the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. It's a national holiday in America, and widely known as a day of service to the community.

To that end, more than 50 volunteers from Mississippi Power Company were hard at work all day long at West Elementary School in Gulfport. The volunteers worked on the outdoor classroom, planted trees and shrubs, and even created an outdoor pond for the children to enjoy.

The volunteers are happy to give back to the community, especially in areas of education, which is near and dear to their hearts. Last year alone, Mississippi Power employees donated their time and talents on more than a 300 service projects spanning the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast.
