MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

It was an event that was a long time coming in the City of Moss Point. Ground was broken Friday morning on the new $4 million Moss Point Police Department.

The new facility will be located on Bellview Street, right next to the new fire department.

The new police department will take the place of one that was built decades ago and had fallen into disrepair. In fact, Hurricane Katrina damaged the old police department and repairs were patchwork at best. Following a hard rain, police officers would actually have to mop up water from the floor.

The new facility will have almost 12,000 square feet of space, with two stories, training rooms, holding cells and a city court room. Construction should begin sometime next month and will take about a year to complete.

Moss Point Police Chief Art McClung said Friday was a banner day for the city and its citizens. He said the new building will mean better morale among officers and better efficiency in the police department.

The $4 million price tag for the police department is being paid for with a combination of state, federal and local grants, as well as private donations.
