KROTZ SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

The new governor wasted no time in getting an update on the high water levels.

Governor John Bel Edwards got a first-hand look Wednesday at some of the areas that could be impacted by Mississippi River flooding.

He made stops and flew over three cities: Vidalia, Krotz Springs and Morgan City.

The Louisiana National Guard started building a levee out of Hasco baskets on January 7. They have built anywhere between 2,500 and 3000 feet. The goal was to keep the back water out.

Governor Edwards said instead of these quickly built temporary fixes, the state needs to come up with a permanent solution.

"If we are going to have these flood events every few years, rather than have to go through these times where we scramble and spend a lot of money and in a hurried fashion, put up these temporary solutions," said Edwards. "In fact it would be more cost-effective in the long run if we can find the resources necessary to do some more permanent work."

The governor said because the rising river was going to split between outgoing Governor Bobby Jindal's administration and his, Jindal helped transition and prepare Edwards for the flood waters.
