GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Shoppers in east Gulfport now have another place to buy groceries. Wednesday morning, a new neighborhood Walmart opened on Pass Road at Anniston Avenue.
The store's assistant manager, Steve Surdam, was looking forward to a big crowd on opening day. He said a band and plenty of vendors would be on hand at the new location, along with free food to welcome shoppers.
Construction of the 24-hour grocery store didn't come without its share of backlash. Despite being on busy Pass Road, there are a lot of residential neighbors nearby who were leery of the traffic it would bring, and its proximity to their homes.
A new turn lane has been installed from Pass Road onto Anniston to help with traffic flow from the west.
