GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Shoppers in east Gulfport now have another place to buy groceries. Wednesday morning, a new neighborhood Walmart opened on Pass Road at Anniston Avenue.

The store's assistant manager, Steve Surdam, was looking forward to a big crowd on opening day. He said a band and plenty of vendors would be on hand at the new location, along with free food to welcome shoppers.

Construction of the 24-hour grocery store didn't come without its share of backlash. Despite being on busy Pass Road, there are a lot of residential neighbors nearby who were leery of the traffic it would bring, and its proximity to their homes.

A new turn lane has been installed from Pass Road onto Anniston to help with traffic flow from the west.

The Mississippi State Legislature is back in session and as usual a fight is brewing over money. Still unresolved is what to do with  $750 million coming from BP over 17 years because of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. To the people here on the coast, there is no question that all of the money should be spent on projects in South Mississippi. But so far, the powers in Jackson and the rest of the state won't agree to that.
