BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - After announcing plans to run for Congress, Biloxi City Councilman Robert Deming will not be challenging incumbent Steven Palazzo for the 4th District seat after all.
Friday was the qualifying deadline for all candidates wishing to run for office, and at 5pm there was only one name on the Mississippi GOP's list for the 4th District: Steven Palazzo. GOP representative confirmed to WLOX that Palazzo was the only candidate who qualified to run.
Deming gave WLOX this reason for not running.
"I was excited, and we prepared a campaign that would be highly successful with one problem: the time frame. We were pushed up against the window, because the time. The primary was moved to March 8th. The deadline was January 8th, less than 60 days to make a run against the incumbent," said Deming.
Deming posted a note to supporters on Facebook Friday night saying it was "not the right time to pursue this challenge." He cited fundraising as a challenge with such a short period of time until the GOP primary.
Deming's decision not to run means Steven Palazzo will face face Democrat Mark Gladney in the general election.
