Class back in session at Harrison County Head Starts

Class is back in session at Head Start centers across Harrison County. When class let out for winter break on Dec. 17, the scheduled restart date was Jan. 5. That date was eventually delayed to Jan. 7.

The schedule change was announced on Jan. 4, but many parents and students said they did not receive a notification. These parents brought their children to Head Start centers Tuesday morning expecting to drop them off. Finding the doors locked led to a lot of frustration and confusion.

In December, the Department of Health and Human Services terminated the Gulf Coast Community Action Agency's services to the Head Start program. GCCAA had been providing services for Head Starts in Harrison County through a federal grant.

The termination was prompted by issues of failures to report incidents of misconduct by staff at Head Start centers.

Now, another agency has stepped in to temporarily provide the service left vacant by GCCAA. The Community Development Institute is scheduled to run Head Start for six months.

In the meantime, an active search is underway for a permanent agency to take its place.
