BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A crash on Interstate 10 in Biloxi sent a Harrison County sheriff’s deputy and another driver to the hospital New Year’s morning.

"Neither one remembers exactly what happened.  He [the deputy] took a heck of a hit," said Biloxi Police Corporal John Doucet.

The accident happened in the westbound lane near the 40 mile marker, about a mile west of the Woolmarket exit. Doucet said a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Ronald Cameron, 66, of Ocean Springs slammed into the deputy’s patrol car sending it spinning across two lanes of traffic. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Doucet said the deputy was stopped on the right shoulder when Cameron's car drifted off the highway and hit the rear of the patrol car.

"There was no sign of braking before the hit. The deputy’s car spun around 180 degrees into the right and middle lanes of I-10," Doucet said.

What caused Cameron to veer off the highway into the deputy remains under investigation.

Earlier in the day, a Gulfport Police cruiser was also rear-ended on I-10. All those involved in that accident are okay.
