GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Florida man accused of slamming into the back of a Gulfport Police cruiser in I-10 Friday morning is now charged with DUI.

Investigators say Zachary Kapua, 28, from Key West, FL was driving east in a Volkswagen Passat when he hit a Hyundai Santa Fe sending it into the stopped police car. Both the officer and the woman driving the Santa Fe were being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Gulfport police spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the officer was stopped on I-10 just east of U.S. 49 assisting a driver who lost control on the rain slick highway just before 7am. The accident with Kapua happened about 40 minutes later, and forced eastbound traffic on I-10 to be detoured north on U.S. 49 for about an hour.
