When the Mississippi State Legislature convenes this week, lawmakers will be considering what to do with the first $150 million of the $2.2 billion dollar BP oil spill settlement. Representatives and Senators from the entire state of Mississippi vote on that spending plan.
The oil disaster was in the Gulf of Mexico and clearly affected our coastal counties much more than the rest of the state. We hope the state leadership and lawmakers from across the state work with the coastal legislators making sure South Mississippi gets what it deserves.
There is certainly plenty to be done. Legislators should not rush to spend the millions. They should make sure the money goes to projects that make good sense in helping our economy.
