BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

For about an hour this morning, South Mississippi appeared to be paralyzed by Mother Nature’s violence. The pre-dawn sky got eerily dark. Winds whipped. Debris flew through neighborhoods. Trees toppled over. Power lines short circuited. Hail bounced off roofs. Cars slipped off roads.  And then, almost as fast as it roared into town, the storm system moved east. The weather threat was over.

In its wake, the late December cold front left a series of minor inconveniences that impacted several communities.

Power lines on West Wortham Road toppled over, forcing cars to temporarily detour around the damage. By 7:30 a.m., rescue crews moved those lines off the road, so West Wortham could reopen.

A tree toppled over on Red Creek Road, causing an apparent gas leak. Response teams quickly assessed the situation.

A variety of accidents on local roads caused traffic backups. One crash was on Highway 53 at Cable Bridge Road where a car rolled over. The most recent wreck is at Lorraine Road and I-10.
