Kevin Wayne is the young man who made tackle after tackle for four seasons at Long Beach High.
In his senior season, the 5-foot-4, 180 pound Wayne, piled up 213 tackles, 16.5 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions, forced four fumbles and had 2 fumble recoveries.
Kevin Wayne is the 2015 WLOX Defensive Player of the Year. He accomplished so much despite a so-called lack of size.
Wayne said, "My dad taught me at a young age height realy didn't matter. It's all about the heart and determination in a football player. And my coaches gave me an opportunity to play even though I'm undersized. Just never looked back."
In fact, Kevin Wayne was always moving forward, ending his high school football career as the all-time leading tackler at Long Beach high, surpassed Mississippi State linebacker Richie Brown.
"I found out the record during my freshman years was 522, my coach told me, "stated Wayne. "I had a hundred tackles my freshman year and I just worked real hard during the off-season every single year. Just balled-out on the field. Just tried reall hard and that meant a lot to me to finally break the record."
Long Beach head coach Forrest Williams watched Wayne outplay much bigger players game in and game out.
Williams said, "There is really no measure for heart and how bad somebody wants something. Kevin measures 5'4" and that's legitimate and he doesn't hide behind that and doesn't walk out there, but nobody says a player has to be a certain size."
Kevin Wayne wants to prove once again, he can play on the next level.
Coach Williams said, "I know Belhaven is looking at him, very interested in him. They like him a lot and I would tell those guys they're getting a football player. You can get athletes but you can't always get football players in guys like him. They're going to have a nose for the ball that will always work towards that."
Wayne added, "Size really doesn't matter. I can play at any level. I think I have the determined and the heart and I think I can play with anybody."
On Monday WLOX will announce the Offensive Player of the Year.
